From Pitch Deck to a Compelling Employer Brand

“Your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room.”

- Jeff Bezos

This quote applies to your employer brand as well. What do your employees and candidates say about you when you are not there? Do you live by your employer brand or is it just a slogan hanging on the wall?

The more it aligns with what you truly believe and your basic principles the better.

A good place to start is with your pitch deck. Even if you are working on your deck you can use what you have to build a compelling employer brand.

You can revise it as you revise your deck.

Look at the basics of your deck and you can see how elements align.

  • Your vision and mission

  • The problem you are solving

  • Your solution

  • The business opportunity

  • Your team

  • Your future

  • What makes your startup a good investment

Now, take the elements of your deck and make it personal:

  • Your culture and values

  • What makes your employees important

  • How is your startup challenging and fun

  • What will they learn and how will they grow

  • Why this is the best time to join

Yes, End That Interview Early…

  1. If your candidate lies on their resume or to you, is not qualified, is not a culture or values fit, or the interview is just not going the right way.

  2. Be professional and acknowledge you are ending the interview early. If appropriate, explain your reason(s), but avoid arguments. Perhaps the candidate can explain their situation and can resolve your concern.

  3. If the interview is in-person, walk them to the door and see them out.

What is “Employee Branding” vs. “Employer Branding”?

  • Employee branding is the practice of creating a meaningful, engaging experience for your organization’s internal stakeholders.

  • Employer branding is different because it focuses on how a company markets itself to potential hires rather than presenting its current employees to the world.
