What a Bad Hire Really Costs You

#1 Emotional energy, passion, focus for you and your team

#2 Setbacks, missed goals, and incredible amounts of time

#3 Company reputation (and yours)

#4 Lots of wasted $$$$$$$

10 Ways To Avoid a Bad Hire

1 Start with truly understanding what you need - technically and non-technically

2 Develop a precise job description and “Ideal Candidate Profile”

3 Prioritize alignment with your culture, values, and mission

4 Be realistic about your work environment; do not “sugar coat” it to make it sound better than it is

5 Implement an effective interview process with all interviewers understanding the role and the “Ideal Candidate”

6 Implement work samples, code assignment, tests, presentations as part of the interview process

7 Take your time to thoroughly vet and test candidates

8 Do not fall in love with any candidates

9 Continue to interview other candidates until an offer is signed

10 Check references thoroughly with detailed questions

Bonus: Design and implement highly-effective on-boarding

The process does not end until successful onboarding. Without this, even the best employees may lose interest and passion if they feel they made a mistake in joining your company.

Act quickly if a new employee is not working out

  1. Clarify the issue(s) and determine if the issues can be resolved or not

    • Get feedback from reliable sources

    • Determine if reassignment is an option

  2. Provide clear and honest feedback

    • Get the employee’s input and see if there is a path for success

  3. Transition the employee respectfully and quickly

    • Develop resources for the team to offset loss

  4. Bonus tip: Keep your team informed and maintain team morale

  5. Bonus tip: Ensure you are covered legally
